Maxime Bruneel is a French director and motion designer whose colourful and energetic work is beginning to be noticed.
Bruneel studied at both Penninghen University and the New York School of Arts, and his graduation film “Valse Statique – La theorie du combo” (“Static Waltz – the theory of the combination”), uses a combination of art direction, graphic design and typography to provide the audience with a new and quirky visual sensation.
Bruneel has been gathering attention since he directed the music video for “Your Love”, by Australian duet The Aston Shuffle. In the music video for “Mr Overtime”, by Punks Jump, Bruneel uses a series of bright images and typography to match the tone of the upbeat, techno music. The images, which are at times borderline abstract, provide a narrative to the music using vibrant block colours that evoke energy in the viewer.
However, using these same techniques, Bruneel creates an entirely different sensation within Alain Bashung’s “Variations sur Marilou” (“Variations on Marilou”), which is a far more peaceful song. Using detailed drawings and repeated motifs, Bruneel is able to produce a languid, fluid music video to accompany Bashung’s mellow voice, showcasing his diversity as a director.
Maxime Bruneel has accredited his rising success, in part, to his use of Vimeo.
